Description

"Stole away like a thief in the night." That is how Frederick Schwatka described the beginning of his northern exploration "Along Alaska's Great River". One of the nineteenth century's foremost explorers, he was constantly surrounded by controversy. His expedition of 1883 north from Portland, Oregon, literally did have to steal away into the night.

Entertaining easy read. Schwatka had a ridiculous propensity for naming anything he saw w/ the most obscure of names, never taking native names into account. Every important or semi-important person gets the nod in his journey along the river. Even though he was both a doctor and a lawyer, his scientific acumen was less than impressive (at least in this 'popular' version). Still a good read.
