Rumanians regard Eminescu as their greatest poet. The richness and suggestive verbal power of his poetry have prompted some to compare him with John Keats. His influence was so profound that Rumanian poetry and poetic diction have developed along lines that would have been impossible to predict on the basis of their traditions and achievements up show more to the mid-nineteenth century.
