Or if you'd prefer it in roman letters, the book is "Raika Dōmei: Nagoya shageki!" and it's by the three people Akasegawa Genpei 赤瀬川原平, Akiyama Yūtokutaishi 秋山祐徳太子, and Takanashi Yutaka 高梨豊 (whose names I have not reversed to fit western prejudices, even though the software on this website reverses names).

It's the first of three (so far) books by the Raika or Leica Dōmei (alliance), a term that covers the artist, occasional prankster, and old camera nut Akasegawa, the artist and occasional prankster Akiyama (not to be confused with various photographers named Akiyama), and the actual photographer Takanashi, who all like wandering around unlikely corners of Japanese cities with Leicas or similar. Thankfully they don't go on about their Leicas, and indeed the name is a bit of a joke.

This book has a mixture of color photos and black-and-white photos. Takanashi likes things that are wrapped up (he'd later get a good book out of that concept), Akasegawa likes doors that go nowhere and so forth. The book is devoid of a single image that's really arresting; it's more like a very good collection of photos, some with subtle wit, of Nagoya taken by a humorous elderly uncle. The book is unlikely to thrill anyone but it should please many.

Oh, texts and captions are all in Japanese only. ( )
