Très américain, donc très manichéen ! Le livre a été publié avant le 11 sept 2001 et il commence par un attentat dans lequel un terroriste écrase son 747 sur le capitole et décapite le gouvernement des USA. Le vice-président est un spécialiste du renseignement et il se retrouve à la tête du plus puissant pays du monde, sans plus aucun membre du gouvernement précédent. Il va essayer de gouverner comme le ferait sans doute n'importe quel citoyen non politicien : avec beaucoup d'honnêteté et de conviction, mais sans les compromis politiciens...et bien sûr, en plus, tous les méchants de la planète en profitent pour se liguer contre les gentils américains.
Livre un peu caricatural (un peu!) mais agréable à lire.
Su punto de partida coincide con el final de Deuda de honor, en que un atentado en el Congreso acaba con la vida del presidente de Estados Unidos y con la de la mayoría de sus ministros. Ahora, todo el peso de la nación recae sobre los hombros de Jack Ryan, el hombre que minutos antes había jurado el cargo de vicepresidente del gobierno. Todas las miradas están puestas en él, pero ¿cómo se gobierna una nación sin gobierno? ¿Cómo va a sacar a su país de la inquietud y la aflicción en las que se ve inmerso?

Tom Clancy was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 12, 1947. He graduated with a degree in English from Loyola College in 1969, became an insurance agent, and in 1973 became the owner of an insurance agency. It was not until 1980 that he started writing novels. His works include Red Storm Rising, The Cardinal of the Kremlin, The Sum of All Fears, show more Rainbow Six, Dead or Alive, and Threat Vector. His books The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger were adapted into major motion pictures. He also wrote nonfiction books including Into the Storm: A Study in Command, Submarine, Armored Cav, Fighter Wing, Airborne, and Reality Check: What's Going on Out There? He died on October 2, 2013 at the age of 66. His last book, Command Authority, co-authored with Mark Greaney, was published posthumously in December 2013 and made the New York Times bestseller list.
