"This collection of essays by eight historians--along with an epilogue by noted scholar Donald G. Mathews--pushes the historical investigation of race and ethnicity in new directions. Addressing subjects from the 1830s to the 1990s, these essays underscore the struggle to define and redefine ethnic boundaries and etiquettes to match changing circumstances. Two essays offer insights about evolving relationships between southern whites and Native Americans. The Reconstruction era is the focus show more of two other essays. One examines Louisiana's three-tiered racial structure, while another delves into the differing fortunes of urban and rural blacks in Wake County, North Carolina.
