Description
A human hand is found in the zoo's elephant enclosure. The rest of the teacher and ardent environmentalist turns up on the lawn. Although admired by his students, nearly everyone else seems to have a reason to want him dead.Tags

Finding a decomposing body during a sweltering July morning, isn't Oliver von Bodenstein or Pia Kirchoff's idea of a good start to the day. Granted, the victim is probably worse off, having been chopped up... not that he cares anymore.
Initial investigations identify the victim, as a controversial eco-activist: idol to troubled teenagers, and arch-nemesis of all large enterprises: like the Opel-Zoo, where his body has been found. With a mile-long list of possible suspects, several dubious incidents that predate the crime, our two heroes seem to have landed yet another convoluted case.
Having found the prequel (Eine unbeliebte Frau) equal parts boring, convoluted, and overflowing with complex terminology, I figured my lacking language show more skills were to blame. So I decided to give the series another try. Turns out that when it comes to administrative jargon, my comprehension level is nowhere near fluent in any language, so there was still plenty of boring stuff to go through. Luckily, there was also some interesting IT detecting and even a bit of romantic drama to wade through, which made the reading experience easier to digest.
I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of BS when it came to the technological aspect of the clues. It was actually believable, and didn't end up turning things into voo-doo territory.
The romantic subplot of the story, relatively easy from a language comprehension point of view, was also easy to find fault in. Did Pia piss me off like no tomorrow! As soon as anyone was offering her a bit of attention, she was starting to entertain sexual fantasies with them.
I get it, recently divorced, living alone with only horses for company, and battling a hostile colleague on a daily basis does not make one well-rested and alert cop, but still. You do not go on dates with possible murder suspects. Nor do you throw jealousy fits about them in front of your boss. Sheesh!
Score: 2.7/5 stars
Rounded up score, if only for the mental note of eventually getting to visit the citadel in Kronberg. Admittedly, the action scene taking place within its walls was totally cool. And the result of the whodunit-type of investigation wasn't bad either. But this tendency of following murder investigations through increasingly bureaucratic clues, is unlikely to become my go-to (sub)genre.

I was going to drop the series here, but then I noticed that starting from the next book of the series, English translations are also available. Which is not to say that I won't be reading the rest in German, but maybe they get more interesting?

Wesentliche Spuren werden nicht show more weiterverfolgt.

Great characters, fast-moving and unpredictable storyline. A well-written book to recommend!
