Description
The fourth and final part of Helen Forrester's bestselling autobiography concludes the moving story of her early poverty-stricken life in Liverpool. In 1940 Helen, now 20-years-old, is working long hours at a welfare centre in Bootle, five miles from home. Her wages are pitifully low and her mother claims the whole of them for housekeeping but she is still thrilled to be working and gaining some independence. The Second World War is affecting every part of the country and Hitler's Luftwaffe show more nightly seek to wreck havoc on her home city of Liverpool. Then, tragedy is brought shockingly close to home and Helen is left reeling when she receives some terrible news. But there is no let-up in the bombing and the Germans seem determined to bring the country to its knees. When a move brings more trouble for Helen, she is determined that she will face it, as ever, with courage and determination. show lessTags

I am reading the last of the series first...not on purpose but through ignorance. But this is a slice of life in Liverpool during the war and this book stands alone just fine for me.
I will search out the first three books for sure... a very good read for me with detail that satisfies me.

This is a sequel to Helen Forrester's excellent autobiographical trilogy, but I found it disappointing. Unlike the earlier books, this didn't read like a story and I didn't find it moving or even particularly interesting. Too many facts and unconnected anecdotes.
sad story about living in Liverpool during WW2. Getting bombed, not having any money, being cold, losing 3 men in the war, having very difficult parents.
This is the last part of Helen Forrester's autobiography.
