Mr Short has here attempted to resurrect the combat skills of the Vikings, using medieval fight manuals and trial and error. The things he and his compatriots discovered while working on this stuff, with actual weapons, are informative, and give a balancing viewpoint on both the primary and secondary sources of Viking military history. I'm not sure if by reading this you will become a Viking warrior--that would take many years of actual physical training under a teacher's watchful eye--but you will learn things you didn't know, and that is always a win-win.
I can't fault it, the author takes the evidence (he certainly knows his Icelandic Sagas) then draws rational and reasoned conclusions. Some sections do come from a re-enactors point of view, but he make that clear from the beginning. All in all, an excellent addition to my library.
Very interesting. Short has taken archaeological evidence and combined it with the evidence from the Viking sagas to reconstruct some of the techniques that may have been used by Viking warriors. From a practical standpoint I have little to disagree with.

- (Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)The year 1066 is frequently used as a convenient marker for the end of the Viking age. In that year, at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Norwegian King Haraldr harðráði was repulsed and killed as he attempted to reclaim a portion of England. It was the last major Viking incursion into Europe.
