I loved this book and it became increasingly harder to put it down the further into it I got. I like how the author wove not only a romance into a mystery, but also a secondary romance was tossed into the mix. The characters were well developed and it didn't get muddled or confusing having basically 3 story lines going at the same time. I also loved the reference to a couple from an earlier book, and a "guest" character from the same previous book. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves murder mysteries, romances or both!
McNaught can be hit or miss for me. This book is definitely a hit. Though I think it dragged quite a bit in the middle, I really enjoyed the romance. Michael is my favorite kind of McNaught hero.

I was bothered more this time around about how little time took place between Leigh finding out her entire marriage had been a lie and her hooking up with Michael.

Still and all, a good read.
I've been a McNaught fan since the 80's and I do enjoy her work. However, listening to this audio book was annoyingly difficult. A good narrator alters his/her inflection and tone without changing his volume. This book must be listened to with your hand on the volume control. The constant volume changes are a distraction that takes away from the experience. Why are some authors so careless when choosing narrators???
Enjoyed the book immensely. Great twist on the love story and how someone can love a person from afar just to let that person have a wonderful life.
For someone who adores reading romance combined with some mystery and murder this would be the ideal book. For me it was enough to keep me reading it and romantic enough to annoy me. Can't say it wasn't good though.
This was a decent book, but that's really the best that I can say about it. I find that, in general, McNaught's historical romances are better than her contemporaries. The suspenseful angle never really came together and the romance was predictable. I enjoy McNaught's work -- just not this book.
I loved this book, but then again I'm almost always into what Judith McNaught writes. It was thrilling but also had all the emotional parts that I love so much! Thanks for another great read Judith Mcnaught!

Dearest Spence,
In keeping with tradition, I want very much to give you a letter of advice like the one I wrote for your brother in the dedication of my last book. But I can't. I'm so awed by your ch... (show all)arm and entranced by your laughter, that I can't wait until your older so that I can ask you for advice. How do you make people smile whenever they look at you? I know where you got your eyes, but where did you get your joy? Where did you get so much magic?
I have so many questions to ask you, but you're only two now, so I'll have to wait for my answers. The only thing I know for certain is that you're going to chart your own course through life. And if that course happens to be one that causes great trepidation in the hearts of your parents, then you can count on me to soothe things over. In the meantime, I will give you this one little piece of grandmotherly advice: Don't let any of us change you.
First words
Miss Kendall, can you hear me?
