I mainly enjoyed reading this book because of the consistent humorous undertone of the story and Alice’s actions. For example, when his sons reflected sunlight through the windows of government offices, President Roosevelt used flags to signal back the message, “A. T. T. A. C. K. on this building must immediately cease.” Also, even in her later years, Alice enjoyed making mischief by purposefully seating people who didn’t like each other side by side, right next to her pillow that had “If you can’t say something good about someone sit right here by me” written across it. My favorite quote from the book arises when a friend of President Roosevelt’s asks him why he doesn’t do something about Alice. Teddy Roosevelt show more replies with, “I can do one of two things. I can be president of the United States or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both.” In addition to the humorous stories, the illustrations were hilarious, especially on the page where President Roosevelt yells, “ALICE!” as she jumps into a collection of water in her full and very lady like attire. show less
I love this book. In simple words, it tells the story of the eminently capable President Theodore Roosevelt, a man who fought in wars, dealt with business leaders, and ran America, but failed to rein in his daughter, Alice. The story neatly parallels Teddy’s successes with his failures to control Alice. The pictures show a mischievous Alice and a bewildered Teddy and include bubbles of their conversations. I would have loved this book more if I hadn’t already read last year’s book about Alice Roosevelt, a remarkably similar story of Alice’s exploits.A sample:“Teddy knew how to handle the Russians and the Japanese when they couldn’t stop fighting each other. Teddy got them to shake hands and make up. He got a Nobel Peace show more Prize for that.Teddy knew how to handle the planet. He helped create a system of national parks so that the land and wildlife were protected. But Teddy Roosevelt didn’t always know how to handle his oldest daughter, Alice. He told her that while she lived under his roof, she had to obey his rules. What did Alice do? She simply decided to spend her time over his roof!” show less
I really enjoyed this book, I thought the author used a great way of connecting Alice's quirky personality to the illustrations. This was fun to read, and also extremely informational at the same time which is rare to find. The author also displays facts about Teddy Roosevelt throughout the book when they explain how " he was able to be the president of the u.s, however never knew how to control Alice." I thought it was adorable too how they showed that Teddy was able to let loose every once in a while and join in on Alice's fun.
I really like the book "Mind Your Manners, Alice Roosevelt!". I especially enjoyed the illustrations. They added humor to the book and helped the reader to understand all of the silly things Alice would do in the white house. For example, there is an illustration of people reacting to her snake, Emily Spinach, popping up in the middle of the State Dinning Room. I also liked the language used in the book. At some points in the book the author uses words that are typical of conversation from that time period. For example, when all of the Roosevelts' were playing together they are shouting things like: "Utter rapture!", "Bully fun!" and "Slick!". These are phrases not typical in modern day vocabulary, but common to the time period of the show more book and Alice's life. The big idea of this book is about Alice Roosevelt and her life and the mischief she caused in the White House. show less
Who knew that the U.S. former president, Teddi Roosevelt, had such a daughter with such a funky personality. Alice Roosevelt was considered a a wild young lady for her time. When other ladies minding their manners, Alice was mischievous. The White House was her playground. She even had a snake as a pet! Even her own father, the president of the United States was having a hard time handling her. You can't help but love her free spirited personality.
Mind your manners, Alice Roosevelt
This book is about Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter Alice Roosevelt. It tells the story of how crazy and foolish she was growing up. She loved to cause trouble and loved to have fun more than anything. It tells of her exploits in the white house and her getting married. But in the end it says she never minded her manners and had fun. I liked this book for three main reasons. On reason is the book was funny. Some of the things she did in the white house as a joke was really funny. It also shows the president as being powerless to control her which was funny to see. Another reason that I liked the book was the pictures were very well drawn and familiar. All the pictures are very recognizable like Teddy show more Roosevelt and certain things in the Whitehouse. This makes the story seem more lifelike and make me more interested in it. The third and final reason that I liked this book is that it had a good message. Its message was to have fun with your life and no matter what not let people control you. Do what you have fun doing despite what other people say. I thought this was an important message and it resonated with me because I love to have fun and live my life to do that. In conclusion I liked this book because It was funny, recognizable pictures, and good message. show less

Alice is Teddy Roosevelt's oldest daughter. You would expect her to behave appropriately since she was the president's daughter. Wrong! She was always getting into trouble. She loved to play pranks on people and she was adventurous. Her behavior was not lady-like. President Roosevelt didn't know how to deal with her mischievous behavior. Even as a grown woman, she liked to play around and made people upset. Alice Roosevelt lived to be ninety-six years old, perhaps because she never took life so seriously. Children will find this book funny and interesting
