Although much of the material from the 6.5 book was simply updated to produce this book, it remains a classic text for anyone seeking a deep understanding of the popular MS variant of the SQL language and supporting MS platform. There is a lot of good history here covering MS's early relationships with Sybase and IBM, and how the product evolved into its current incarnation.
Although the material is increasingly dated (as with with most technical books unforturtunately), the concepts covered here still cover the core of the engine and language quite nicely.
