Description
Meet Quinn Cummings. Former child star, mother, and modern woman, she just wants to be a good person. Quinn grew up in Los Angeles, a city whose patron saint would be a sixteen-year-old with a gold card and two trips to rehab under her belt. Quinn does crossword puzzles, eats lentils without being forced, and longs to wear a scarf without looking like a Camp Fire Girl. And she tries very hard to be the Adult--the one everybody calls for a ride to the airport--but somehow she always comes up show more short. In Notes from the Underwire, Quinn's smart and hilarious debut, she tackles the domestic and the delightfully absurd, proving that all too often they're one and the same. From fighting off a catnip-addled cat to mortal conflict with a sewing machine, Quinn provides insight into her often chaotic, seldom-perfect universe--a universe made even less perfect when the goofy smile of past celebrity shows its occasional fang. The book, like the author herself, is good hearted, keenly observant, and blisteringly funny. In other words, really good company. show lessTags

I loved young Quinn Cummings in the '70s film, The Goodbye Girl, and now that we've grown closer in age (!) I devour her woman-next-door blog, The QC Report. So I'm thrilled with the release of her book of essays, Notes From the Underwire.
Outside, the cover’s image of a woohoo-ing woman on a runaway roller-coaster (pulled from Maidenform’s 1950-60s I Dreamed I … ad campaign) is prophetic. Because inside, Cummings writes hilariously about her unruly roles as woman, mother, homeowner, pet rescuer … and a few essays about Hollywood. There are touching pieces, too -- when she’s 14 and her mother is diagnosed with lymphoma; when she’s 18 and the early days of AIDS have already claimed a quarter of the men in her neighborhood, show more prompting her to volunteer on a national support hotline. I always want more, and am glad I have a portion of her blog's archives still ahead of me. show less

I have always liked Quinn Cummings, as a child actor and now as a writer. I didn't know of her blog until I read the book and even after I have not popped in more than once or twice. I just enjoyed her stories of her life now, with the relatively infrequent sharing of her past. I don't think she is trying to be amusing or the Erma Bombeck of today. She is relating stories and situations of her life and I happened to enjoy it very much. I appreciate her taking the time to share.
I adore Quinn's writing, so funny, intelligent, warm and sometimes biting all at the same time !

A humorous and funny look at a women’s life and the trills she goes through being in a relationship, raising a daughter and being a former child star. This is a fun, relaxing easy read. I think it is a great beach book or in my case spring break – beach book.
