An Early beginning reader's book Just a Little Sick by Mercer Mayor a realistic story one that everyone can relate to. This is a superb reading age appropriate for kindergarten to 1st grade. In this story the little boy becomes ill and discovers that being sick is not as much fun as he hoped for. He soon finds out that his mother knows best. He learns he can't play while he is trying to get well. The font is nice and large, the illustrations colorful and sweet. Have a mini lesson on health covering keeping your hands clean, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing and other health habits that need to be reinforced at this age.
Little Critter is happy to be home, just a little sick, until he discovers all the things he is NOT permitted to do and decides that he'd rather be in school. Another nice entry in the very easy reader cannon, the Little Critter readers are just a bit more difficult than the Biscuit books (less repetition).

He moved to New York City in 1964, pursuing further instruction at the Art Students League of show more New York, where he met an artist named Marianna who became his first wife. He soon created a new portfolio and with these new sketches persuaded editors at Dial Press and Harper & Row to give him some illustration work. Mayer published his first book, A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog, at Dial Press in 1967. It was notable for being a completely wordless picture book one that tells its story entirely with pictures. Mayer was one of the first illustrators to be credited for using this format. Five more books in this series were to follow. Mayer joined Golden Publishing, creators of Little Golden Books, in 1976. Through them he has sold his "Little Critter" and "Little Monster" series, which are popular with beginning readers. His title Just Me and My Dad made The New York Times Best Seller List for 2012.
