My star ratings normally reflect my overall sense of excitement about a particular title. In this case, I am instead awarding stars for merit. This is quite a slow-paced novel, but it is written with careful precision and it does build to a satisfyingly dramatic, if not entirely unforeseen, conclusion. It was also refreshing to read a novel set in the '30s that did not dwell on the impending disaster of 1939, after all, the people of the time were for the most part blissfully unaware of what they were heading towards.
The thing I love most about this book is the way the author so perfectly captures the speech and character of the Cornish.
