IT'S LAURIE NOTARO'S HOLIDAY HANDBOOK.
PREPARE TO LAUGH YOUR TINSEL OFF.

It's the most wonderful--and most dreadful--season of the year, when boxes of truffles attack your thighs, drunken holiday revelers stay long past their welcome, and your grandmother has conniptions at the department store over the price of hand lotion. Welcome to Laurie Notaro's Christmastime.

In ten brand-new stories and three previously published favorites, Notaro shares the sidesplitting daily disasters of the holidays, like finding herself on emergency feminine product recon at midnight on Christmas Eve; surrendering to the inevitable Horrible Gift Parade by simply asking for holiday dish towels and giant white underpants from Sears; battling the morons in line at the Seventh Circle of Hell, otherwise known as the do-it-yourself craft store; and trying to live down her reputation as the Most Unfun Christmas Party Guest Ever, due to an unfortunate misunderstanding involving a fake overdose and emergency paramedics.

So whether you find yourself at the Dull and Smart Party or the Raucous and Stupid Party this holiday season, you'll always know where to find Laurie--just follow the chocolate trail over to the cheese platter. She'll be the one dialing the cops.

4.5/5 I had the pleasure of sitting next to Laurie Notaro in our AP English class back in 1983. Her satirical voice was on display even way back then. I have followed and read her books ever since, and I reread my favorites. This is one of them. If you're from my era, you will laugh snot out of your nose at her and her family's antics around the holidays. She's the female Dave Barry, IMHO, and she never fails to lift my mood. ( )

This one was meh...It wasn't hilarious, it was light-hearted, occassionally funny. I chuckled a couple of times, I smiled a bit, but I didn't fall off my sofa laughing.Pretentious, witty humor doesn't really do it for me. I must say, though, that if the writer's mother is as obnoxious and dogmatic as she is described, then, my God, Laurie Notaro is a true heroine...Hence the two stars. ( )

A fast, easy, entertaining read......especially: K-Mart-"Kotex fits. Period (a big Red dot)"....and the punch line of the story, which you will have to read for yourselves.... Definitely Chick-humor!

I only wish my family was as funny....LOL! Well, actually I'm so grateful they are not! ( )

Hysterically funny. I laughed, I cried, I fell out of my chair. Read it. ( )

Funny (as in amusing, not laugh out loud) and entertaining in spots, but ultimately this book didn't do much for me. ( )
