Description

"We all know what Rainbow is," began Lamondois. "Rainbow is a planet colonized by science and designed for physical experiments." "The Far Rainbow was written at one breath, it is full of dynamics and genuine dramatism." - Literary Gazette "Science-fiction stories by the Strugatsky brothers are philosophical pieces. They are full of action but each action is clearly imbued with speculation."- Neva Magazine "Take the Far Rainbow, for instance. 'Authentic' is the word, and this is rather show more unusual where science fiction is concerned." - The Young Guard Magazine The brothers Boris and Arkady Strugatsky have chosen different careers. Arkady is a linguist and Boris an astronomer. Perhaps it is this divergence of interest which has helped them to describe the world of the far future so vividly. The brothers Strugatsky are among the most prominent Soviet science-fiction writers. They have written a number of works in the genre. show less

I loved Far Rainbow, a short novel about the tragic fate of a group of scientists whose experiments unleash destruction on their colony planet. The characters were beautifully drawn, and their largely futile struggles to decide who and what should be saved rang true. This is beautiful storytelling that packs an emotional wallop.

Popular science-fiction writers, the Strugatsky brothers have used the genre since the 1960s to comment on contemporary society, at times provoking major controversy. It's Hard to Be a God (1964) is a dysutopia with commentary on historical theories. The Snail on the Slope (1966--68) features a KGB-like organization and an extraordinarily show more oppressive atmosphere. Pre-glasnost, glasnost, some of the Strugatskys' major works had to be circulated in samizdat, but the brothers' situation is now dramatically better. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
