Description

"As children, Eliza Blacknall and William Denton ran wild over the fields of southern Ireland and swore they would be friends forever. Then fate took Will away to England, while Eliza stayed behind to become a proper Irish countess. Years later, Will finally makes his way home-as an English soldier sent to crush the Irish uprising. When he spies the lovely Eliza, he is captivated by the passionate woman she has become. But Eliza's passions have led her to join the Irish rebel cause, and Will show more and Eliza now find themselves on opposite sides of a dangerous conflict. When Ireland explodes in bloody rebellion, Will's regiment is ordered to the front lines, and he is forced to choose between his duty to the English king and his love for Eliza and their Irish homeland." - Taken from cover p.4. show less

This reminded me of one of the old style historicals with it's sweeping problems. However, it was written much more like a modern historical. Some of the challenges were a little over the top and I had a hard time figuring out how the hero and heroine ended up together. A unique plotline from a period/location that is under-represented in historicals but not compelling.

I enjoyed this romance. The tension between the main characters was good. The story was well written and I felt myself "in place" which is always fun with a book. The ideological differences between Eliza and William are classic fodder for love conquers all tales but it allows you to be educated without realizing it.

The book moves right along and follows Eliza, Irish to the soul, as she first spurn William because he has joined an English Regiment. He is a second son so he really had no other options. She marries and is widowed and meets him again as he returns to Ireland to quell a brewing rebellion. She has always felt that the poor were being mistreated and is part of the opposition.

Will they be able to overcome their differences and show more find love? I won't spoil the ending .....

I will say that I love the cover!

This is a story of Irish patriotism that is believable and honest. Eliza and Will are childhood sweethearts who see themselves on different sides of the battle for Irish independence. A good trilogy opener that sets up future books.
To be completely honest, I had a particularly hard time getting into this book...it just didn't draw me in the way I wanted it too. The beginning is where the hook should be and I just didn't feel it. Perhaps enter the drawing and see for yourself.
