Introduction

Poetry is the national art of Britain and Ireland. Our great poets, from
Shakespeare to Burns to Yeats, from Milton to Tennyson, have always
mirrored our public identities and our private souls.

'Absence, hear thou my protestation'

Absence, hear thou my protestation
Against thy strength,
Distance and length:
Do what thou canst for alteration
For hearts of truest mettle
Absence doth join, and time doth settle.
                              John Hoskins, page 3
Quotations
Probably he was big
As mosses, and little lizards, they say were once big.
Probably he was a jabbing, terrifying monster.
We look at him through the wrong end of the long telescope of Time,
Luckily for us.
                                                            D. H. Lawrence - Humming-Bird, page 169

Book description
This collection of poems, extending from the 20th century back to the 13th century, or perhaps beyond, encompasses works from poets well known and lesser known. It presents works that have been favorites for generations and works that are so obscure, they are new to many current-day lovers of poetry. There are works from poets everyone knows and from anonymous poets and lesser-known poets covering a broad range of subject matter.
