I've honestly only played one real session with this setting, but found it to be one of the most satisfying platforms I've ever used. Your character feels both powerful and powerless, and the system has steep penalties for power gaming (as compared to D&D 4E, which basically allows any character to do anything they want, totally destroying the feeling of being a unique asset to the party). The rogue rogues, the fighter tanks, the cleric heals, and not everything every character can do is combat related.
If you find yourself longing for an updated D&D 3E or 3.5E, this alternative breaths just enough new life into the style and mechanics that you'll want to play all night.

It's a game rulebook! It's a massive weight and exercise tool! It's both!
In all due seriousness, Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook is now ensconced on my permanant shelves of game books to refer to often. A very very well done expansion of the OGL D20 licence, Pathfinder further refines and updates the rules in many good ways.
Whether you're new to fantasy role-playing or an old gaming dinosaur like myself (playing since 1982), there's much to love and enjoy about Pathfinder. Give it a look, regardless of whatever rules you normally use, as I'm sure you'll find something worth adopting into your own games.

Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 thrives with a fresh update of core classes and streamlined mechanics. This is an excellent book well worth the hefty $50 price tag as it also includes material traditionally found in the Dungeon Master's Guide.
D & D 3.75, done by the writers who left when WotC decided to change the entire system with D & D 4th Edition. Probably the best d20 fantasy game still around.
This is one huge, complete guide to the Pathfinder gaming system. It has everything in here a player needs to get started, like most systems monsters are in a different manual. i consider this an upgrade from D&D 3.5.
I love what the Pathfinder System did for roleplaying! Like a lot of other people, I consider this to be D&D 3.75, and it's great. Love most of the artwork too!
