Color pictures of the route from Chicago to California document the roads, signage, landmarks, and vistas as they existed in 2006. Bridges and abandoned roadside motels provide a glimpse of how Americana in the 50s, 60s and 70s would have looked to people making their way at the zenith of the car culture. The Introduction explains how it was replaced by newer interstates. The rationale for why the interstates were built is not covered. Excellent resource for anyone interested in car culture, post-war and Cold War travel habits.
