Faolan was born a malcadh, a deformed pup, because his front paw is splayed.  So, after he was born he was taken by the Obea to be left to die.  However, he survived, but not on his own.  He was nursed back to life and raised by a grizzly bear, Thunderheart.  Faolan learns the ways of the grizzly bears, but he is a wolf.  He is confused about his own identity and even more strange is the swirling design on his splayed paw.  He feels it means something; he feels like he is part of something bigger than himself.
