Description

Artists at the Fry describes the background to works in the Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden, Essex. The gallery's North West Essex Collection is based on the artists of Great Bardfield including Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Michael Rothenstein, John Aldridge and Kenneth Rowntree, who lived in this small Essex village between 1930 and 1970. The book recalls the famous `open days' of the 1950s and the strong connections with the Royal College of Art. The Collection also spreads its net to show more include other artists such as Michael Ayrton, Robert Colquhoun, Robert McBryde and Isabel Lambert, who lived in nearby villages. With original essays by Olive Cook and Malcolm Yorke, plus biographical notes on the thirty artists who comprise the collection, Artists at the Fry is also a valuable reference book for those interested in twentieth-century British art, book illustration and design. show less
