Illustration on mine more spiritual, in a way, with the girl holding her arms up saluting the sunrise. But this is an introduction to the concept of stellar astronomy for the little ones, just as some of the Bear books are an introduction of lunar astronomy for those even littler. I love original science books for kids, and I appreciate Asch's bright & friendly illustrations. A winner for home-schoolers and preschools.
In this book, Frank Asch depicts the joys of the sun through the eyes of a child, and joy the phenomenon of sunshine does for this child. It begins with the child waking to the rays of the sun and subsequently takes the reader through the child’s day. The storyline flows like a piece of poetry, reiterating several times throughout the reading that “The Sun is my Favorite Star,” and painting the image of the sun as a friendly companion rather than an effervescent ball of gas. The child then plays with the sun, making shadows in its rays and playing hide and go seek. The sun is portrayed as always being present, as even in nighttime, its reflection shines from the moon, insinuating that a child is never alone. The pictures in the show more book are paintings enhanced with Adobe Photoshop. I found this book to be so-so. The illustrations are too computerized, and even though the message of the book reflects the writer’s synchronicity with nature’s divine elements, the computerized aspect takes away from this. show less
A simplistic book about a girl’s affinity for the sun. The girl gives various examples about why the sun is her favorite. The illustrations are pleasing to the eyes and the story is a sweet love story. It’s a great book that can be used as a teaching point about the sun being a star. Kids may not know that it is, to this day that concept still blows my mind.
Review: This books main message was to explain that the sun in a star. Throughout the story, the little girl describes why the sun is important and repeatedly explains that it is a star. I thought this book would be great for younger age children who are just learning about why the sun is important. I really liked how the author told the readers that the sun "plays hide-and-seek" because it hides behind clouds sometimes, and "goes away" but that it can create a rainbow after it rains. I thought that younger children may understand this concept more because of the terminology.
Summary: In this book, a little girl talks about the sun being her favorite star. Throughout the book, she explains why it is her favorite star and all the things show more it does for her. For example, she explains that it wakes her up and that it allows her to play outside. show less

I absolutely love this book. Many of the students did not know the sun was a star and how it reflects on the child's day throughout the book and bases other weather than jst the sun.
There are many stars in the galaxy. But only the sun wakes us in the morning, helps us grow, plays hide-and-seek behind the clouds, and paints pretty pictures in the evening sky.
A little girl goes through the day and narrates why the sun is her favorite star. The sun wakes her up in morning, it follows her through the day as she plays. It is a good book to teach children about alll the things that the sun does. Great read aloud for pre-k or kindergarten teachers introducing the sun as a star for a science lesson.
