Sequel to “The Ornament Tree.” This one focuses on Clare, Bonnie’s cousin. While Bonnie is away at school in California and secretly planning to work as a medical worker in China in order to prove her serious intentions to attend medical school, Clare remains in Seattle at the boarding house run by the Devereaux women. She comes to more fully realize the injustice of poverty especially when she notices a little boy named Jackie being abused by his father and forced into child labor. She is also secretly in love with Mr. Younger, the blind boarder. As it turns out, he has fallen for her, too.
