Description

Through a combination of the linguistics of a reconstructed language, archaeology, and comparative mythology, Deep Ancestors breathes life into the ancient Proto-Indo-European culture and religion. Ceisiwr states "This book must be considered a report on a work in progress. As time goes by, new research will be done, new ideas and data presented, and old texts and archaeology reinterpreted. This will require changes in the beliefs and practices of reconstructed Proto-Indo-European religion. show more Consider this a process of progressive revelation, except that instead of coming from the gods it comes from scholars." show less

Overall an excellent book - lots of background material, comparative mythology and cultural insights. However - too much PIE linguistics and way over complicated ritual reconstruction detract from it's overall usefulness. But only slightly - a worthy addition to any pagan/heathen shelf.

I'm not really prepared to write a full review, but I'll say two things about this book.

First off, it's a fascinating look at a thorough reconstructionist look at what little we can tell of the Proto-Indo-European culture, with lots of extrapolation and whole-cloth changes (which all make sense to me, by the way).

Second, it's heavily geared towards group work. Given the cultural basis, and the tendency in ADF (which is really the target audience for this book), that makes sense, but as someone who would like to integrate some of this into a personal solitary practice, it's very sparse.

Oh, and one thing this could use, and that could easily be added on re-print: Chapter titles in the table of contents. Right now, it just says Chapter show more 1, Chapter 2, etc. I'll go through and write them in by hand in my copy, but it would be very useful to have them included. show less
