Interesting book that gives an overview of the divisions in the Spanish society during the civil war in Spain. the developments are shoen through the eyes of the father of a family who sees his life, and those of others around him, falling apart. He starts an extramarital affair and moves to the USA to find the girl when he loses her in Spain.

i had a good reading month, read 4 books and all of them were wonderful. however this is the best of the 4! it see during the Spanish Civial War, so it is part historical novel, it explores family and love, but mostly in is about time. how the past creates the future

Muñoz Molina schrijft mijmerend: beschouwingen en beschrijvingen in lange, meanderende zinnen met veel herhalingen. Die stijl geeft zijn verhaal een hypnotiserend effect dat in schril contrast staat met de bewogen periode die hij beschrijft: het uitbreken van de Spaanse burgeroorlog in 1936. Door de manier waarop hij vertelt, lijkt er in het boek niet veel te gebeuren, terwijl de hoofdpersoon wel zijn persoonlijke leven en de Spaanse republiek (in die volgorde) voor zijn ogen ziet desintegreren. Het overkomt hem allemaal. Hoewel ambitieus en succesvol, is hij toch niet het type dat zijn leven in eigen handen neemt.

Muñoz Molina neemt zijn tijd. Hij doet er lang, zeer lang over om het hoogtepunt te bereiken; een intense emotionele show more ervaring waar langzaam naartoe gewerkt wordt. Een ervaring als van een lange wandeling, waarop je je regelmatig afvraagt hoe ver het nog is, terwijl je tegelijkertijd toch gestaag blijft doorstappen, onderweg genietend van het landschap dat langzaam verandert en zich voor je ogen ontvouwt om uiteindelijk te eindigen met een schitterend panorama. show less
