The dog steals the show in this ABC concept book. As a young girl bakes a pie and lets it cool, her dog becomes more and more determined to share in its deliciousness. The girl is oblivious to his begging and jumping, though, and shows him outside mercilessly. But he does not give up... back inside, he schemes until he finds a way to make the pie his own. Young readers will be fully engaged in his alphabetical thought process: "Apple pie-- Bake it-- Cool it-- Dish it out-- Eager for it-- Find a crumb of it..." Adults will enjoy the charming retro style illustrations of the dog and his girl.
Genre: ABC books
Summary: The book follows the journey of a desperate dog's attempt at sneaking a piece of a freshly baked apple pie. Each letter is a new point in the story, furthering along the plot.
Review: What I like about this book is how each letter helps the story progress. I think children get more out of a story that has a ending, instead of just "A is for apple" "B is for ball". I think though that this engages the children more. They have a plot to look forward to and to make inferences about. What drew to to this book is the illustrations. I think everyone has different illustration preferences. Some prefer realistic, others simplistic. I like the cartoonish kind of drawings, the ones that make everything look cute. I think show more the theme of this book is perseverance. However, maybe it's not the best lesson to teach, as the dog wasn't allowed to eat the pie. This book could be read in classrooms for fun. It can also be an introduction to making inferences about "what happens next?" show less

The illustrations feel very simple in a nice way. The colors are more muted. Seeing everything the dog does to try and get to the apple pie is funny and had me cracking up. Not sure how it will fair for story time but it is my back up book.

The illustrations in this ABC book are relly fun, and remind me of illustrated books from the late 50's. This book has great vocabulary like and miserable and pine and ogle. It is a fun way to tell a story with the alphabet, And of course a dog trying to eat a pie is a great plot!
