Overly dramatic! There are some real facts about many species of sharks, but there is quite a bit of editorial emphasis on the predator, dangerous, man-eater aspect. It must be aimed at kids (boys?) who don't like to read much, and are attracted by somewhat violent, scary "facts". Naden plays up the man-eater aspects shamelessly and includes dramatic images of shark's mouths, clouds of blood in the water, and a story of a diver in a cage who is at risk from a white shark, but is not harmed. Grade 2 or 3 reading level. Not what I wanted for kindergarten readers.
This is a book about sharks that eat almost anything: small fish, big fish, people, and even boats. They eat live or dead sea animals. Their sharp senses plus swimming speed make them very good hunters and dangerous killers. The jaw of the white shark is so strong that they can bite a person in half. Sharks skin feel like sandpaper.
"I Can Read ABout Sharks will give you a wealth of knowledge about all varieties of sharks. I love how the book begins with SHARK! and gives the reader a sense of urgency right away because we can all relate to that feeling that sharks bring humans. The book has a lot of illustrations of different varieties of sharks. However, I feel that it lacks captions for the illustrations and there are a limited number of diagrams throughout the book as well. I did like how they included a section about the process that scientist must go through in order to study sharks. I would recommend this book to a shark lover or anyone wanting to learn a little more about sharks." -- Sarah Wurster (GoodReads)
