6.5/10, didn't feel like a compelling enough fantasy story. ( )

Not as good as I'd hoped for. I didn't love the narrator much, and the references to The Immortals Series (still unread then) had me quite confused at times. Then you add to the fact the whole book takes place in two days-ish. I was very mleh. ( )

This series follows Riley Bloom the younger sister of Ever Bloom in The Immortals Series by Alyson Noel. I read the first three in The Immortals and I’m not really impressed. It’s your typical bad paranormal romance. But one of the highlights of the first books was the relationship between Ever and her younger sister, Riley.

Riley made the first book - it was actually the main reason I decided to read the next ones hoping there would be more of Riley. There wasn’t but not long after, Noel released the first of a series featuring her.

This series follows Riley as she takes on the afterlife. Riley is a spunky, daring preteen. Her journey to reach maturity is something I think a lot of readers will be able to relate to - even though it’s perhaps aimed at a little bit of younger audience. I really like the concept of the afterlife Noel describes and it was interesting to see how Riley navigated the new challenges she faced.

Perfect lighthearted read. ( )

This book has such an interesting concept that I was immediately interested in Riley's world. However, the storytelling left a LOT to be desired, so I was pretty disappointed. I think a lot of it is due to the young audience this was written for and the fact that the main character is 12. A pre-teen would probably really enjoy the book. If I can find the next book at my local used book store at a cheap price, I might continue just to find out more about the world, but I'm not going to go out of my way. ( )

Quotations
Most people think that death is the end. The end of life-- of good times-- the end of, well, pretty much everything. But those people are wrong. Dead wrong. And I should know. I died almost a year ago.

Book description
Welcome to the Here & Now

Riley Bloom left her sister, Ever, in the world of the living and crossed the bridge into the afterlife—a place called Here, where time is always Now. Riley and her dog, Buttercup, have been reunited with her parents and are just settling into a nice, relaxing death when she's summoned before The Council. They let her in on a secret—the afterlife isn't just an eternity of leisure; Riley has to work. She's been assigned a job, Soul Catcher, and a teacher, Bodhi, a curious boy she can't quite figure out.

Riley, Bodhi, and Buttercup return to earth for her first assignment, a Radiant Boy who's been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Many Soul Catchers have tried to get him to cross the bridge and failed. But he's never met Riley...
