A story about a little mouse who just doesn't want to go to sleep in his own bed. Lots of parents and kids will be able to relate to this book about the battle to feel comfortable sleeping on your own.
Summary:
Go to Bed, Ed is about a mouse that loves going to bed, but hates staying in bed. Every night Ed goes into his parent’s room and has an excuse why he cannot sleep in his room. Every night his dad walks him to his room and tells him that he is a big mouse now. Finally one day mom and dad come up with a plan. That night when Ed tried to get into his parents room he could not go in. His dad comes out of his room and walks Ed back to his room and tells him that the night light is on so don’t be scared. Ed still got out of his bed and gathered up all of his stuffed animals and gets into bed with them. Ed tells them not to be scared. After that night Ed slept in his own bed every night.

Personal Reaction:
When I was younger I would show more always come up with a million excuses why I couldn’t sleep in my room. I used to try to sneak into my parent’s room at night to sleep in their bed. I can relate to Ed in this book about wanting to be in his parent’s room. I, like Ed, eventually stayed in my room when my parents would leave a light in the hall on for me and leave my door cracked open.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1.I would use this book in a unit about growing up. Ed’s dad keeps telling Ed that he is a big mouse now. I would have the students tell me a few things that they do that makes them feel like a grown up.
2.I could also use this book in a unit about family. I would ask if anything their family members do bother them, like when Ed keeps his parents up at night. I could talk about having personal space and having their own “me” time.

A cute story about Ed, a young mouse too scared to sleep in his own bed. This book has great illustrations, use of humour and teaches the reader a valuable lesson.
A great story with wonderful illustrations to help calm the fears of those things that go bump in the night for any little one.
