The "Nostratic" hypothesis - positing a common linguistic ancestor for a wide range of language families including Indo-European, Uralic, and Afro-Asiatic - has produced one of the most enduring and often intense controversies in linguistics. Joseph Salmons is the Lester W.J. 'Smoky' Seifert Professor of Language Science at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He also co-founded the Centre for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures and edited the journal Diachronica from 2002-20019.
