Description

Colonel Shropana was willing to destroy the Jorenians just to capture Dr. Cherijo for the Allied League of Worlds--so she felt little remorse for selling him out to brutal Hsktskt slave traders. But just as Cherijo made her escape, the man she once loved stabbed her in the back--and handed her over to the same slavers. Alone, hated, and feared by her fellow slaves, Cherijo needs all her training to save those in need--a difficult task amidst the endless brutality of their captors, but a far show more better fate than being the League's guinea pig. As she struggles desperately to help those she can, Cherijo reminds herself that good doctors don't let personal vendettas stand in the way of duty. But then, most doctors aren't Cherijo Torin. show less

Surgeon Cherijo Torin heals fast due to the modifications her insanely driven father made to her DNA when he cloned her. Which, given the events about to sweep her up, is a good thing. Betrayed by her husband, enslaved by giant, militant lizard-like alien slavers, with the League (and her father) still hot on her trail and a Mengele-minded alien determined to use her as his latest lab rat... Cherijo's life is about as far from a box of chocolates as it's possible to get. Good thing she's fast on her feet and good with a scalpel - she'll need all her skills and then some just to survive.

Aptly titled, this couldn't exactly be called a cheerful installment - but Cherijo remains determinedly Cherijo through it all. Hopefully the next book show more will see her receiving a bit less wear and tear! show less

Most would argue that this book suffers from relationship problems. I would agree to an extent. I think Viehl has purpose in how she presents the main characters. Still a good read.
I really think the author's started to paint herself into a corner with Cherijo; everything that's proposed to her, she rejects out of hand, without any reference to reason, logic, or even facts. It's really getting frustrating and obnoxious, since I'm sure there are facts there (like Duncan's logic behind bringing her on the ship, etc) that she's not even considering. A doctor like this would take one look at a person with a stomach ache, diagnose gastroenteritis, and never take a look at it again because additional facts might disturb her conclusions, which would make her dangerous. The rest of the characters are beginning to resemble caracatures, as well. Frustrating.
These books become tiresome quickly. This is the third book in the series and likely the last I will read. It's a shame really because these books could have been quite good. However the fatal flaw of these books is the characters. They behave in completely ridicules ways! The main character seems to be completely unable to control her emotions. This leads her and her friends (which are surprisingly easily made and unbelievably loyal right from the start) into unnecessary trouble. On top of that she always does the right thing ethically, in a way you would not expect a real human being to do in the kind of situation she manages to get herself in. Sometimes you just want a hero who is a bit of a bad boy/girl. If you find yourself show more agreeing with this than don't read this book. show less
The mis-use of Irish slang annoyed me so much I couldn't enjoy the book. All different dialects are mixed up, It's like mixing Canadian and LA slang. Like, OMG, for sure, eh?
