The local District Watch - crooked to a man - claim that the killer's motive was a simple theft. Tracking the murderer down with the often-unwilling help of his wife Perilla takes Marcus deep into the murky world of Roman chariot-racing with all its secrets, skulduggeries and scams; and his task is not made any easier by the show more fact that in the process he has a lovesick major-domo, an invisible dagger and Mount Etna to contend with. show less

Marcus Corvinus solves the murder of Pegasus, a megastar chariot racer to prove the innocence of an acquaintance. Fascinating look into the scandal-ridden world of chariot racing.
The case is much more complicated than it seems on the surface. Well plotted. I feel this is one of the better Marcus Corvinus mysteries.
This time, Corvinus is trying to solve the murder of a chariot racing star, a crime that he thinks is lot more complex than the simple theft-and-battery the authorities suggest. The investigation draws Corvinus deep into the not very savory world of chariot racing, and the novel is enlivened with a secondary plot: Corvinus' invaluable major domo is In Love. This is the seventh in this excellent series of Roman mysteries, and there seems to me to be some loss of energy and momentum. Still, they are well worth reading: Rome is masterfully recreated, and Corvinus is an entertaining hero.
Haven't read it yet. Got book after hearing author speak. Great talk, would go again.
