I read this after it was recommended on the "If you Like Fifty..." thread on Dear Author. I hadn't read this author before and a commenter said the reader "learned" about BDSM along with the main female character so I thought I'd check it out. First $6.99 for 146 pages? Really?Kari goes to the Shadowlands BDSM club for some beginner's classes with the man she's been (briefly) dating. After she doesn't like his form of "dominance", she is offered by the boss to continue the lesson with one of the Masters there - Master Dan. The story takes place over the course of the three beginner's classes. It was okay but very heavy on the erotic part of erotic romance. I can't really say why I didn't connect with it super well. I've read very erotic show more books before and enjoyed them. But this one was okay but didn't set my romance loving heart on fire. As a primer on BDSM, I'm not sure it answered many questions for me, but I did appreciate the "safe, sane and consensual" message of the book. show less

While I liked 'Master of The Shadowlands' better, I still really liked this one too.

This one seems centered on 'Self-Discovery' and 'Courage'. At least for Kari.

I liked Kari more than Dan.

Both are great characters. I just think Kari was the more courageous and honest of the two.
Dan definitely had a lot of baggage he needed to let go of. He seems determined to ignore the truth and punish himself.

There is some great show more humorous sayings that make you grin & giggle.

There are some really intense moments. Some of these are heartbreaking and some are erotic.

Speaking of erotic........
You will feel the tingle from the top of your head down to your toes. The adult romance is ⚡ electric!

A fun and fast paced adult romance that will leave you craving 'MORE'!

Dark Citadel is an explosive sexual repertoire of an unyielding teacher eagerly kneeling under the guidance of a ravishing cop as her Master. Sinclair’s enchantment of tantalizing voyeurism continues with the reclusive Daniel. Designated as a dungeon monitor at Club Shadowlands, Master D (Daniel) cherishes supple and curvy women for his alpha ménage overrides. Daniel was briefly introduced in the first piece of the series, as a momentary guard over Jessica. Being strictly professional with the role-plays at the club, he deters from intimacy with his “pets” beyond preferred bondage tethering. Enter Kari! A diffident apprentice, Kari blossoms into an erotically stirred slave plunging Daniel into a cell of uncharted vulnerabilities show more and aggression. The BDSM sessions ignite the right nerves leaving you high and dry. Master D sure knows how to keep his Sub begging for more without bequeathing her with the ultimate pleasure. What more can you ask? It is an unambiguous read to experience a sexually powered roller coaster ride of two souls who are fervently kinky as hell. show less
So this one a little disappointing for me. I expect something new and surprising from an author that wowed me on book one; I guess I should lower my expectations a bit, because this is an ongoing problem for me. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the book, it just didn't do much for me. DARK CITADEL didn't have my blood pumping like the previous book in the series. I didn't care much about the book one way or other, so that kind of makes me sad. ._.

There were some fun—and sexy—moments in this book. I absolutely loved the garden scene... Yumm. It sounded like so much fun, I want to try it! *shiver* (Nope, don't ask. I want to leave an air of mystery So you'll read it to.... Is it working? :D) It so happens that the best part of the show more book for me was at the end. So that kind of sucked. I mean I loved the ending, but the rest was just eh for me.

I will say I do love a man in leather, so Master Dan appealed to me on a purely sexual level. In my head he has this really great, squeezable ass that I'm sure looks amazing in leather. In my head he wears it well.

Okay, it's final. Master D, please GET IN MY PANTS and stay there! Er... Please, sir?

I'm not giving up on this series, though. I have a few friends that mention the books become more and more edgy (edgier?) as they go, so I will soon be reading book three, BREAKING FREE. I'm looking forward to edgier D/s relationships and maybe some ménage? I hope.

Happy Reading!

PS. I was probably a male in another life.

Each book I read by Ms. Sinclair makes me fall in love with her writing even more. I liked this book even though Master Dan was a jerk and it took Kari calling him on his bad behavior to make him realize what he was about to lose. I love that Master Z is a matchmaker and that his mate Jessica is helping anyway she can. I really like the way Club Shadowlands is setup and all the characters that I have met so far. I hope that they each get their own story. I also hope to continue to see older characters in future stories. If you like BDSM stories with a happy ending then you will probably love this author and this book.

Since Master Z has found his mate he is now on a mission to find mates for the men and women show more that are members of the Shadowlands and are his friends. The first up is Master Dan. Dan lost his wife two years ago in a car accident. She was coming home after a night of partying and she was drunk. Master Dan has blamed himself all this time and hasn't taken a sub at the club for more than a night. Everything changes when he agrees to help with Beginners Night at the club and is introduced to Kari. Kari has had a few fantasies about domination but her strict upbringing and boyfriends that are nice but boring has kept her from experimenting. She not sure she understands what all the fuss is concerning sex. So far for her sex is ok but nothing that she couldn't live without.

Dan is a detective. He likes his job and is good at it. He is also a Dominate and a Dungeon Monitor at Shadowlands. He enjoys his time at the club but he never takes a sub twice. His guilt and anger over the death of his wife keeps him from forming any lasting relationships with someone. He isn't expecting the attraction and possessiveness that he experiences when he is around Kari. Kari is everything his wife wasn't. He is an ass several times before Kari starts to give him hell for still mourning his wife. She also points out that it wasn't his fault that his wife was driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Kari was brought up in a strict Catholic household. She is an innocent in many ways and that is one of the things that draws Dan to her. She wants to find a companion that will blow her socks off in the sex department. Shadowlands is very overwhelming for her and she almost runs away several times. Dan is patient with her and he weaves a web of seduction around her, showing her all that is possible when she lets go of her control and just enjoys the experience. Kari is a high school teacher and a volunteer at the local animal shelter. She is intelligent, caring and has a backbone of steel when pushed. She is also a dog lover. Through all the things that Dan shows her and does to her she is brave and accepting. She is also a lot more forgiving that I would have been.

This is another well written story with wonderful characters that the reader longs to see paired off with a mate that will fulfill and complete these men and women. It is nice to see Jessica again. She is still at Shadowlands and doing very well. It is also funny to watch Master Z moving his chess pieces this way and that to get the results that he wants. This is a quick, intense read that those that love this genre will love.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would be tough, but I think this would be it with, Master Z and Jess following a close 2nd. I am not that into BDSM stories, but I started this series based on rave reviews by a fellow book club member. I AM SO GLAD I LISTENED TO HER!!These books are written so well that you feel like the characters are your friends and I don't feel the "ick" factor that some BDSM books give me. I actually read all 4 books in one weekend and can't wait until Master Marcus' story comes out. I love how Jess continues to get into trouble in the books following her own, and how Kari tends to fall right in with her. I would LOVE a Master Z or Master Dan of my own of course I wouldn't turn down Master Cullen or Master Nolan either.
