This books has an almost impossible task, namely to bring to life for non-Italians the writing of one of the greatest Italians -- and a poet at that. While many of the translations lack magic, they do convey the geniality of the man, and the breadth of his sentiment. This is, in fact, as good an introduction as I know to this genius whose name and achievement are so often cited but so little understood outside the Italian-language world
