Relatively basic sci-fi. While the premise that this universe's religious history may not be all it seems is intriguing, it never really goes anywhere. Several opinions or decisions of the characters are repeated needlessly. Action moves without much background.

It's not written badly, but fails to hold the reader's interest. Later books in the series may improve once the Angels and their history come more into focus. In the meantime this book felt like a long explanatory chapter rather than a stand alone in its own right.… (more)

Lesson learned from this book: A little communication can go along way. lol-kidding.

Darkness, blood and vengeance. The story is laid out in a fascinating present and past timeline, it gave time to take a breath between the nightmare of the present. Overall my heart ached after finishing this book, so many choices made, that could have led to different futures had the brothers only had a bit of trust and not make rash decisions.

Look forward to checking out more books by this author.… (more)

The Apples of Idunn by Matt Larkin is the first installment in The Ragnarok Era series. Odin swears vengeance against the frost giant who killed his father.

Plot 5/5: Excellent plot involving Odin of Norse mythology.

Characters 5/5: Vivid and vibrant characters throughout the story.

World building 5/5: Incredible world building that takes you directly into the world the author has created.

Pacing 5/5: Full of action, betrayal, loyalty, friendship, brotherhood, and love and sex (a bit descriptive, and visually vivid).

Writing 5/5: A few typos, but not in any way did it interfere with the story.

Overall 5 stars

I highly recommend this book to anyone into Odin or Norse mythology.

I liked Larkin's "Skyfall" series, but he really shines in this one. By his own admission this novel is dark, but despite the dark story, the author's passion for mythology really shows - it is a compelling, well-written story with interesting characters that run the gamut from greed to self-giving. It is filled with supernatural and mythological creatures that stir ancient echoes of time. This is a prequel to the Ragnarok series, and if this book is an indicator then I am certainly looking forward to it as well.… (more)
