Following the Call: Living the Sermon on the Mount is a series of readings that attempt to provide illumination to various aspects of this passage from Matthew. The book is broken into four different part that correspond to a different part of Matthew Gospel. Each part is broken into several chapters, which correspond to a different theme for that section. The chapters do not provide a direct commentary on the Gospel but rather illuminates a theme from the Gospel. There is no direct commentary on the Gospel, but the editor does include reflection questions and suggestions for other readings from Scripture. This book would be fine for a Sunday School group, though at 52 chapters it would take a whole year to go through the book. I believe tha this book provided interesting readings reflection questions.… (more)

This book is composed of several authors from the past and present about the community of faith. Some are better than others. Overall, it is a good to read to gain perspective from different Christians authors. I enjoyed the first few chapters. The rest was not as appealing to me.

In 333 pages this book offers writings from all periods of Church history. From the Didache, through the medieval Church, the Reformation, and modern times, there are writers who have something to say to the Christian. Not all writers are Christian, but each writer has an important message.
This is a great compilation. I was impressed by the quality of the materials presented. Using the section on Sources and Acknowledgements, one can locate further readings by an author who impresses the reader.
There is a section which can be used to stimulate discussion of the materials, but the book can be read for one’s own enjoyment and spiritual development.
I would recommend this book.

"Following the Call: Living the Sermon on the Mount" is an amazing book which brings to bear the viewpoints of over 100 of the most brilliant minds that have ever studied the Sermon on the Mount! While I do not agree with every viewpoint in this book, and I suppose no one will agree with every viewpoint in this book, I still highly recommend this book as it will certainly enlighten any reader and it will cause any serious reader to examine just exactly what he/she does know and believe about the greatest sermon ever preached. This book is not a "quick read" if read correctly. It is meant to lead the reader to serious thinking and much ruminating on what is (and is not) said in the Sermon on the Mount. It is a book to which one may refer over and over and never tire of doing so. I really like and highly recommend this book!… (more)
