Wow. This really brought me back to being a small child awake in a sleeping house. Amazing! The illustrations didn't hold much appeal at first, but I'm glad I gave it a read because they're just about perfectly tuned to the text. Whoever translated this from the Japanese is clearly British (the phrases "have a pee" and "told her off" are not necessarily going to confuse little Americans, but they'll probably be unfamiliar).

I think I am dealing with my birthday is coming-what are you doing with your life-30 is looming-crisis-by looking at/reading lots of children's books. It's my way of stopping time and remembering the wonderful innocence of childhood. This book is a gem. The illustrations are just too sweet. Plus, the little girl is named Emily, could it get any better?

This book is simple but heartfelt. School is canceled because it’s snowing. But you can not play outside, and Daddy’s plane can’t take off. This book fosters a peace and a calmness that comes along with a quite snowy night. The illustrations are not typical of modern picture books, but their very uniqueness helps the reader feel at peace, and cozy, and in the presence of others who care.
