I would actually give this 3 1/2 stars if that was an option. I like the story. The reason I wouldn't give it a higher rating is mainly because of continuity issues. It distracts me from the story when continuity is lost. I also feel as if things happened a little too quickly without enough explanation. That said, I enjoyed the story enough to bump the rating up rather than down. I will probably read the next book in the series at some point, but it won't be at the top of my TBR list.

This book wants to get to the reward without putting in the work to actually build emotional investment or even develop believable relationships at all.
Relationships are not determined by their history but by the current plot needs and how much drama the author wants to invoke.
But this is not how proper storytelling works.
Beyond the amateur writing, the plot couldn't be more generic and unoriginal as well.

So it's just an unoriginal concept executed badly.

I really enjoyed this story. Mal is hilarious. His comments are so snarky. I liked all the characters and their interactions were fun. Aisling was the best. There were some great lines.

"I hated playing defence. It was my nature to attack, to destroy those in front of me, to wreak havoc and pain. And here I was babysitting a fool of a child who didn’t know enough to trust his comrades. His misogynistic need to protect women was going to be the death of us all. Aisling and Nuala were more than capable of combat; I wouldn’t have brought them in if they weren’t. And I hadn’t met a single Fae who couldn’t properly engage in battle. Humans might have set up a system where they tricked their women into thinking they couldn’t do anything to protect themselves, but the Fae had no qualms about raising their women to destroy any enemy that presented itself to them." The commentary on women from a male character was inspired. Obviously less inspiring since the view comes from a female writer but inspired nonetheless. If only men agreed with such viewpoints.

Bastian looked at me over his shoulder. “This isn’t what you described.” “I’m sure they’re just the triggers. When we pass them, the sensory mask will drop. Just be ready,” I said with a shrug. I didn’t know what I was talking about, but everyone responds well to confidence.

I liked the easy friendship between Blair and Mal but I also felt it didn't quite work in this story. The breaks were kind of annoying. There were only a few modern day chapters but I felt it broke up the story too much. On the other hand, considering this is only a novella it was very good. I felt all the characters had their time to shine and the backstories were interesting. I'd love to see more of Aisling and Mal's friendship. There was a lot of depth to this that I hadn't expected. And I loved the actual plot itself - them robbing the dragon - it was great.

This was an odd read. Blair was kind of unlikeable. She did grow on me but it took a while. She also made me sad, she was so closed off from everyone and everything and it made me feel lonely just thinking about it. The whole thing with Adrian at the end was horrible. Frankly I didn't see that coming at all. I think I kind of believed it was going to be a love triangle which I hate, so the fact he won't be around is good but man. What a surprise. I liked Finn and Malphas. But because it's from Blair's point of view the connection to them is kind of flat. She doesn't want to let anyone in and it's hard then to like the other characters. Perhaps in the next few books though this will change as she grows into herself. The relationship between Finn and Blair is kind of odd. I'm not sure if this is being set up for romance or not - I'd like to think not - I prefer the brother/sister thing they've got going on but then he was flirting with her, which I think was just an act but they never really discussed it and it was odd and kind of unclear. The storyline was interesting, although I am kind of iffy about the whole demons/angels thing. I've read a lot of those ones and I am kind of over it. But I think I like Blair and Malphas and Finn just enough to continue and see how it all plays out.… (more)
