In the Seveties and Eighties of the past century, Nonesuch issued a long run of amazing and significant recordings, doubtless subsidized by money-making pop albums from another part of this hugely successful company. What a catalogue: you could find songs by Schoenberg cheek-b-jowl with the Musica Calendar of Gregor Josef Werner! Anyway, this album is a sheer joy, only slightly vitiated by the absence of one of Work's early and widely-sung numbers "Lost on the 'Lady Elgin'" and by the sorry vocal tone of tenor Clifford Jackson… (more)
