Thanks for the comment about my review! I'm always glad to hear from people that have read them. As to Lyra - I certainly see how a character like Lyra could be very attractive to a reader, but she simply rubbed me the wrong way right from the beginning. Much of what she does that generally is interpreted as her loyalty (and I've no doubt was intended to show her loyalty) struck me as being self-interested. Her journey north seemed like less of a search for Roger and more of a fulfilling of what she had always wanted to do... That sort of thing. It's been quite a while since I read it (I've been uploading some old reviews), so I don't remember particulars.

I did enjoy the 'big ideas' parts of the novel, and found myself very much in sympathy with a lot of Pullman's ideas. I like books that make me think too. I understand the hype surrounding the trilogy - and all of the people that love it so much. I just can't seem to join them - have you ever had a character that you knew you should like...and if it were anyone else, you would, but... That's Lyra for me.

Anyway, sorry to leave you a novel. I love talking about books I've read, and I love hearing from people. So thanks!
