Main character discovers(?) a protective, suit that is impenetrable when he wears it, and appears as flames from the outside.

I'm pretty sure that's Shield by Poul Anderson .

Shield featured a protective force field generator, not a suit, and there were no flames associated with operation, IIRC. Worth reading anyway, though not one of his best.

Maybe Space Ranger by Isaac Asimov - although in that it's an immaterial mask that acts as a personal force field and disguises him from other humans rather than a "suit".

And the mask was ancient Martian technology that only he possessed, wasn't it? These are the "Lucky Starr" kids' novels, originally published under his Paul French pseudonym.

5-6> Yes. But there is mention that the mask/suit obscures his whole body and part of it looks like smoke and part like flame (can't remember if the smoke was his head or his body). That's what I was thinking.

Sorry jenewman, I honestly thought it was Shield - it's about 35 years since I read it. Like DE says, it's a good read anyway.

Close, but no Corona (hehe). Thanks--I got the book and read it. Not bad, but early stuff. So-so writing, but plausable science (except the Martians). I'm going to order Space Ranger and see if that's it.

Space Ranger--and of course it had to be Asimov.
Thanks to all for the help.
