Read this two or three book series in about 2008 but I think it was older. A very old vampire who just wants to live a solitary life seeks out the help of an Englishman to stop the bad vampires from causing something evil to happen. If I remember correctly the Englishman is an academic. Englishman's wife is a beautiful red head who becomes the focus of the vampire's interest. He's a stand up, albeit dead, guy and does not pursue her. Loves her from afar. The first time he visits the Englishman's home to seek help he proves his power by putting the wife in a deep sleep from which she can't awaken.

It's been a couple decades since I read Those Who Hunt the Night by Barbara Hambly so while I'm sure there are some similarities, I can't guarantee it's that book. Also, Hambly apparently wrote an 8 book series starting with this book, and I don't think I've read past the second book. Good luck.

Seconding literally everything, word for word, that pjfarm said about Those Who Hunt the Night.

Yes, this is correct! Thank you. It appears there were only two novels with the James Asher character. Much appreciated.

Actually there are several novels with James Asher, Simon Ysidro, and Lydia Asher; the author is still writing them.

If you check the series data for Those Who Hunt the Night on LibraryThing you should be able to see the others.

I think the most recent is still Pale Guardian, which is set during the First World War.

Update: Turns out I'm wrong, there has been another one since Pale Guardian...
