It covers the wide range of collectibles and such that were associated with the original (and best) Captain Marvel during his initial run in the 40s. About the only item I was familiar with was the movie serial (which I had seen). Had heard of one or two others but not seen them before. Certainly a book that any comic fan will be interested in at least perusing, if not adding it to their reference shelf. no reviews | add a review

Shazam made his debut inWhiz Comicsin 1940, and outsold his biggest competitor,Superman, by 14 million copies a month. It wasn't long before a variety of merchandise was licensed-secret decoders, figurines, buttons, paper rockets, tin toys, puzzles, costumes-and a fan club was created to keep up with the demand. These collectibles now sell for outrageous prices on eBay and in comic book stores and conventions. Seventy years later, an unprecedented assortment of these artifacts are gathered together by award-winning writer/designer Chip Kidd and photographer Geo Spear. Join Kidd, Spear, and the World's Mightiest Mortal in this first, fully authorized celebration of ephemera, artwork, and rare, one-of-a-kind toys, and recapture the magic that wasShazam! Instead, it's a coffee table book (with great graphic design, I'll admit) filled with photos of very rare collectibles and miscellanei connected to Fawcett Comics and the Marvel Family.
If that's of interest, I recommend the book; if you're looking for more on the characters and history, this book barely covers the basics, I'm afraid. ( )
