There are several Anna Hibiscus chapter books for early readers, but this is the first picture book starring happy little Anna. Anna lives in Africa, "amazing Africa," as she calls it, with her large family. In this story, Anna is so happy she doesn't know what to do, so she goes around asking all her family members what they do when they're happy. A more joyful picture book would be hard to find. The illustrations are friendly, colorful, and full of energy. Of course, this book is significant not only for its great execution, but also its setting. How many everyday life books for children are set in present-day Africa? And of those, how many are super happy? ( )

It wasn't til the clerk pulled this from the hold shelf that I realized it was a picture book and not a J chapter book. And I love it just as much as the others. It makes me wish I was still doing story time...it would make for a great addition to a joy or thanksgiving theme. ( )

Filled with joy one morning, Anna Hibiscus shares her feelings with the members of her extended family, asking each member what they do, when they feel happy. Participating in each activity mentioned, her feeling of happiness grows, until finally, sitting quietly in the mango tree and watching the birds, she burst into song...

One of three picture-books devoted to the eponymous Anna Hibiscus - the others are Splash, Anna Hibiscus! and Double Trouble for Anna Hibiscus! - Anna Hibiscus' Song is an engaging tale of this warmhearted girl and her close-knit, loving family. Having enjoyed all eight of the chapter-books about this character, I'm glad I took the time to track down the picture-books as well. They're delightful! Recommended to fans of Anna Hibiscus, and to anyone looking for picture-books about feeling joyful. ( )

Great for children who like to copy people and help them learn they can be original
