I really enjoyed this. My first Bulldog Drummond novel and I will definitely be reading more. Easy read, often amusing, always enjoyable. There are parts that are typical for its age that some readers today might cringe at (in which case they shouldn't read old books in my opinion) but taken in context it's just a highly enjoyable adventure thriller. A dated but absorbing tale of crime/adventure on the Romney Marsh. Hugh Drummond and Peter Darrell having seen the departure of their respective wives for a short break in France get up to their usual mischievous tricks investigating strange lights and the forbidding and fortified house of the eponymous title.

They encounter some strange characters, including the deadly and mysterious "Bossu Maasque". It is Drummond's skills and ingenuity learned in the trenches of WW1 that enable his gang to crack the mystery and escape from a literally tight situation.

If you are a Bulldog Drummond fan you will enjoy this yarn, which dates back to a less sophisticated and complicated era.

Sep 2021: have recently read again and consider this is the best Drummond story for twists of plot and suspense. ( )
