I believe this war the first book I got on wargaming with miniatures aka toy soldiers, well before the expansion of the hobby in the 1970s associated with the books of Featherstone, Grant, and others. Like some of those book, this is a broad introduction to the hobby, with descriptions of gaming in a spectrum of eras: shock period (ancient/medieval), musket period (early modern) and modern (primarily World War 2). Unlike some other books, it includes a section on naval gaming. It also includes appendixes on types of model soldiers, sources of soldiers, and even board war games, though these sections have been surpassed by the later expansion of the hobby.
Most of its rules are very basic, and in includes one principle I have always liked: i case of disagreement over the rules, LET THE DICE DECIDE. ( )
