Hugo 2020 Nominations (Best Novelette); [b:For He Can Creep|52139451|For He Can Creep|Siobhan Carroll|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562862657l/52139451._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71318185]

I loved this. Loved. Unabashedly. My second 5 in all of the 12 pieces I've read for the Hugo Nominations so far. I've, also, been reccommended reading N.K. Jemisin by friends and my book club for 1-2 years so I was incredibly excited to see her name in this list and to get to dig my teeth into a piece by her.

This is a glorious flip on POV again (like Joffery, the cat, in [b:For He Can Creep|52139451|For He Can Creep|Siobhan Carroll|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562862657l/52139451._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71318185], also, in this category), but this time it is the AI combination of a "Founders" knowledge) telling us the outside story of their dialogue with the ceaseless narration "voice" at the main character, a man who was traveled from an economically advanced culture returning to the fallen waste of "Tellus/Earth."

I found it a chilling and wonderful choice that Jemisin made it so you couldn't actually hear the responses from the unnamed main character (who we know so little of, except that once he has 'skin' he is male and black). The intersectionality of this book is off the charts, and I was so pleased to see that she tried not to leave many things out from it where it came to coming together, addressing needs and differences. I liked the writing, the ideas and even the message. Docking one star for lack of subtlety. I like the morals of my stories to not treat me like an idiot who needs everything in bite-sized pieces, spoon-fed. ( )

Ah. Too bad we can’t just corral all the people sharing these Founders’ ideals and eject them into space right now. ( )

Amazing Future

I have loved every story in this Collection. This one is my favorite so far. It aligns with my values and the future I would hope for. My children are not having children because of the way the world has become. Guns and religion and the lies that Trump spread are so bad that I am happy I won't have to worry about how my grandchildren would grow up under what I fear is coming. ( )
