Actually, it was a reread ... after several decades, so I didn't remember much. I liked that the main characters had both shine and flaws, that the friendship had its rocky patches. But the frustrating stubbornness of some of the characters did affected how I liked the book; they made me angry and exasperated, and I unfairly take it out on the book. Stegner is a quiet master of writing - when they're in the woods, you're in the woods, when Larry drives 24 hours straight, your own eyes will itch with sleepiness. A couple of passages I marked: "Is that the basis of friendship? Is it as reactive as that? Do we respond to people who seem to find us interesting?" "And there sat the impossible Ehrlichs, smiling and smiling, with their useless book open and their mouths shut, hating what they envied." ( ) no reviews | add a review
