Fantasy. Alice has been looking for Thomas for 50 years after he was taken by the Crossroads. She has paid a high price — her family and physical pain. You don’t want to be the one standing in her way. Not for any reason. Answers a lot of questions about this period in the family’s timeline while opening more. Good entry in the series ( )

This may be the eleventh book in the series but with the constantly changing POV characters as the series goes on it stays fresh. This one can work a start to the series if you don’t mind spoilers about the previous books. Alice has been looking for her husband for the last 50 years. She appears in her early twenties and is covered in magical tattoos that help her heal and use magic on her search for her missing husband. She is helped by a Naga that has been a family friend on her quest. She works for him tracking down bounties for him while she searches for any trace of where the Crossroads might have sent her husband. When she finds a book in a cave while she is retrieving her backpack, she gets a new direction to search in. She also discovers that things are not what she believes about what she has been doing. There are lots of flashbacks during the book as a part of her traveling between worlds. When she finally starts hitting the right direction to get to Thomas things start adding up to something she doesn’t want to know.

In the eleventh book of the series, the narrative follows Alice Healey-Price, a woman who has been hunting through multiple dimensions for half a century in order to bring home her husband who was taken in a Crossroads deal. I really enjoyed this book. As in all of McGuire's books, the writing is solid and fast paced, and this book takes you into an entirely new corner of McGuire's fascinating world. I recommend this book (and this series) to anyone looking for an entertaining, well written, and detailed urban fantasy universe. ( )

Seanan says in the intro that this is the book she meant to write, and the whole Incryptid series is just leading up to it… Alice has been manipulated by those she thought were allies, but Price-Healy luck reveals part of the trick and she works out the rest with appropriate help. The misunderstandings in the pocket dimension are amusing and completely appropriate. And happy-ish ending...which isn't an ending, thank goodness. More please! ( )

So exciting to finally get the rest of Alice's story (and Thomas's story) after we last saw them in the 1950s. This fills in a lot of the missing pieces, but it's also a good story in its own right. I'm really happy with the ending and what this could mean for the Healy/Price family. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
For Kory. Buckley owes you a lot more than we ever could have realized.

And for Tyvar, for being a true source of joy in a dark time.
First words
[Prologue] The old Parrish place—so called because the man who'd built it, Theodore Parrish, had committed the unforgivable but extremely memorable crime of killing his entire family with an ax as a sacrifice to a horrible swamp god who thankfully seemed to have existed only in his imagination—was never entirely quiet.
[Chapter 1] Normal people aren't supposed to rip holes in the membrane that separates dimensions.
